How do you determine the correct torque or bolt load?

Taking all flanges to 50% yield is NOT correct . The reliability and safety of a flanged joint is highly dependent on the correct load being applied to the bolts. The proper load is determined by analyzing the flange, gasket, and bolt to land on a load that will provide sufficient gasket stress at the assembled state and during operation. Is hydraulic torquing safe?

Hydraulic torquing has been used for over 50 years in all ranges of industry, but the process does have the inherent issue of pinch points – especially for the hands. It takes experienced and trained technicians to provide torquing services in a safe and reliable manner.

Is torquing accurate?

Torquing results in a final bolt load that is typically within +/- 30% of target due to the unknown factor of friction. This range is highly affected by the experience and knowledge of the technician on the wrench. INTEGRA’s technicians have industry leading training and experience to increase the accuracy of the torquing process and achieve the most reliable results.

Bolt torquing is a commonly used method of applying torsional work to stretch the stud and creating axial load. Due to the helical thread form between the stud and nut, when the nut is torqued against a reaction surface, the stud is stretched in the axial direction.
